WREXHAM boss Brian Carey made no excuses after watching his demoralised side crash out of the FAW Premier Cup last night.

The Dragons lost 2-1, despite going ahead early in the second half through Mike Carvill. The home side were level within a minute and looked the better side as they set up a semi-final clash with Port Talbot.

“It was the same old failing,” moaned Carey. “I thought we had done the job very well in the first half when we coped with the conditions, and then we scored first.

“But it didn’t last even a minute.

“Newport grew in confidence and all credit to them for that, but I still believe that the players we had out there should have been good enough to win the game.”

Midfielder Mark Jones was withdrawn midway through the second half with Saturday’s crucial League Two clash at Barnet in mind.

Carey said: “The pitch was heavy and he took a bit of a knock on his ankle, so it was best to bring him off with Barnet on Saturday.”
