DINO Maamria is aiming high.

When asked what his hopes were for the new season, the Northwich boss declared: “I’ll be happy with promotion.”

Maamria will put the finishing touches to his squad for Saturday’s kick off against Cambridge United at home (3pm) after Thursday’s friendly against a Manchester United reserve team, also at the Marston’s Arena.

He says he has made most of team selection already and that it includes centre forward Darren Stamp.

The signing of Stamp was thrown into doubt when Maamria’s budget was cut, but – as financial aid comes from fans and the United crowd pulling friendly – Stamp looks certain to join officially after figuring in most of the summer friendlies.

Mammria said: “His experience, ability and goals make him a vitallly important player for us and he wants to be here.

“Hopefully he will be able to play against Cambridge.

“I am happy with the way pre-season has gone, at least on the pitch.

“I am happy with the players we have got, but not with the number. The budget changed and left me with 16. If was a simple case of our best 11 against anyone else’s then my side would match the Mansfields and Oxfords.

“The bigger clubs have more money and bigger squads. But I still want promotion. The higher you aim the more you achieve.”

Vics go Burton Albion on Tuesday.

Congratulations to Graham Towers, of Middlewich Road, Rudheath, who is the winner of our Blue Square Premier League season ticket competition. His passport to every Vics’ game is on its way to him.
