WREXHAM defender Dennis Lawrence is sweating on his future after contract negotiations reached an impasse.

Lawrence was offered a new two-year deal last December that would have seen the Trinidadian take a pay cut to stay at the Racecourse.

Further negotiations between Wrexham boss Denis Smith and Lawrence's agent were planned for last month before being cancelled in the wake of the Drag-ons' 6-0 loss at Bournemouth.

There has been no contact between the club and Lawrence's representatives since.

"I wouldn't say I'm happy about the way things are going," said the 29-year-old. "I want all this done and dusted as soon as possible, especially as I would need a new work permit to stay.

"This is an important contract for me. I'm 29 going on 30. Who knows, this could be the one that takes me to the end of my career.

"But at the moment I'm sitting around, waiting for things to happen.

"I wouldn't say it's been affecting me on the pitch, but who knows? It's certainly on my mind even though I'm professional enough to block it out.

"I've said before that I'm happy with Wrexham. I love the place and the fans and I don't want to leave. My daughter is in school and she's settled here. It would be a big wrench for us to move. But if we have to, we will."

Lawrence was devastated after Saturday's 6-1 drubbing by Peterborough with captain Darren Ferguson then launching a broadside at players, saying that some should "question their commitment".

The defender said: "That sort of thing hits players in different ways.

"Some would take it positively, others negatively. It depends on the character of the person.

"That's not the way I would have done things, but it's over now.

"I never want to think about the Peterborough game again. We were better against QPR, but I'd never say losing 2-0 was a good result."

Wrexham remain adrift of the top six with their play-off push having stalled of late, but any promotion bid will benefit the giant defender's international ambitions after his inclusion in new Trinidad coach Bertie St Clair's squad for the friendly with Egypt at the end of the month.

"He's very well respected and hopefully he'll have the vision to take us to the World Cup in Germany," said Lawrence. "Being over here I don't really know what the expectation is in Trinidad, but I'd like to think there is a buzz that we can do it.

"He knows Carlos Edwards and Hector Sam well, but I've never played in a Trinidad side he's managed."

Wing- back Edwards was called into St Clair's squad for a match with a Brazilian All-Stars side, but Sam and Lawrence were left in North Wales.

"We weren't worried because it was all explained to us," he said. "Trinidadian football is going through a transitional stage and the funds weren't available to bring a lot of European-based players across.

"This is why they are playing more friendlies closer to Europe. It's easier to bring a few local-based lads here than the other way round."

He added: "This is a big time for Trinidad. We've got World Cup qualifiers starting in June and if we do well we'll be playing a few games over the summer.

"But where better to spend your summer than in Trinidad?"

WREXHAM Independent Supporters Group (WINS) will meet on Saturday to discuss how they can help safeguard the future of the club.

They will hold a general meeting prior to the Swindon Town home game in the Centenary Club, with the creation of a new fund to help the club's financial plight high on the agenda.

Also up for discussion will be the release of funds to the club, additional committee members and an increase in membership for the fans' group.

Organiser Rob Owen said: "This is a public meeting for people to help determine whether funds should be made available to cover the signing of on-loan keeper Mike Ingham.

"We will also look at the potential creation of a separate WINS trust fund and work out the way forward with the club in its current situation."

The meeting will start at 1.30pm and is open to all supporters, existing WINS members or not.
