WREXHAM teenager Craig Owen, who died in a sand dune tragedy while holidaying in West Wales, did brilliantly in his GCSEs.

The 16-year-old, of Coed-y-Felin in Brymbo, was killed when a tunnel dug in sand dunes collapsed on him at Cefn Sidan beach at Pembrey, near Llanelli, while holidaying with his family and friends earlier this month.

Craig, a pupil at Ysgol Bryn Alyn in Gwersyllt, scored five A*s and five As.

His results were delivered by headteacher Rob Ratcliffe to his parents, Ron and Jayne.

A statement, released by Wrexham council on behalf of Craig’s parents and his headteacher, said: “Ysgol Bryn Alyn and Mr and Mrs Owen are justifiably proud of the way Craig approached his schooling and, in particular, this summer’s GCSE results.

“Consequently, whatever Craig achieved was his very best.

“The actual results show Craig was a bright and dedicated student who worked at the highest level. His five A* and five A grades is an outstanding achievement and richly deserved.

“Having delivered Craig’s results to his parents this morning it was a privilege to witness the pride they feel.

“Mrs Owen said the results top everything, as they are the culmination of many years of hard work.

“It is devastating to think such a bright future has been curtailed by the tragic loss of such a fine young man.”

Overall, the school’s pass rate for the GCSEs was 99%.

Mr Ratcliffe said: “I must pay tribute to the efforts of the students, the support of the parents and the professionalism of the staff in maintaining standards.”
