TWO people died and a 10-year-old girl was last night in intensive care after separate road crashes across Merseyside and Cheshire over the weekend.

The victims were identified as a 19-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man.

Police last night said the 10-year-old girl, from Wirral, who was knocked off her bike, was in a stable condition in Alder Hey.

A 38-year-old man from the Greasby area was arrested by police shortly after the crash which happened around 6.20pm on Saturday.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said the collision between the cyclist and the red Vauxhall Astra happened on Lloyd Drive, at the junction with Howell Drive, in Greasby. He said: “A 10-year-old female from the Greasby area was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital with head injuries.

“The child was later transferred to Alder Hey intensive care unit.”

The road was closed on Saturday evening and the bike and car removed to be examined by police accident investigators.

He said the driver of the Astra was arrested nearby and was due to be questioned by police later on Sunday.

Also on Saturday evening, a 68-year-old man from Croxteth died after a collision in Liverpool. Police are appealing for witnesses after the man was in collision with a private hire taxi on Mansion Drive at around 9.05pm.

Police in Cheshire have also appealed for witnesses after a 19-year-old woman died when her car crashed off the road near Chester.

The crash happened around midnight on Saturday when the red Vauxhall Corsa the woman was driving left the road and smashed into a fence.

The 19-year-old driver, from Mold, in North Wales, died at the scene from her injuries, according to Cheshire Police.

Inspector Mike McBride said: “Two female passengers in the vehicle were not seriously injured.”

The crash happened on Burton Lane near O’Kell’s Nursery at Duddon, near Tarporley.

Police from Cheshire Constabulary’s specialist investigation unit based at Blacon Police Station are now carrying out an investigation into the collision.
