A FATAL car crash near Capenhurst following a police pursuit has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

One man died as a result of the collision on the A540 close to the Yacht Inn at about 3.23am today, while the driver suffered serious injuries.

A third man is believed to have been in the car but has gone missing and is likely to be hurt.

Cheshire Police originally received a call from a member of the public who had seen three men wearing balaclavas and carrying a sledgehammer in the car park of the Eight Rights pub in Chester at 3.08am.

A patrol attended the scene and on arrival saw a silver Vauxhall Omega speeding off from the car park.

They lost sight of the vehicle after following it for a short distance on the A5116.

But soon after a different patrol found a silver Vauxhall Omega which had been involved in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle on the A540.
