A KEEN cyclist rode more than 300km to raise funds for Nightingale House Hospice.

Lowri Evans, 46, took part in the 307km Wrekin to the Sea ride in aid of the Wrexham hospice and the Robert Owen House Appeal.

And it paid off with Lowri raising £400 for Nightingale House.

The ride started at 7am on June 21 and had to be completed by 3.20am the following day.

Lowri, who works part-time for New Experience Holidays in Cyfylliog, was joined by three members of the Wrexham section of the Cyclists Touring Club – Pete Dilworth, Dave Statham and John Hamblett.

Lowri said: “I wouldn’t have been able to do the ride on my own. Pete checked and repaired my bike before the event to prevent problems on the ride. He rode the event much faster and was able to have a sleep before we got back!

“I rode the event with John and Dave and we worked together to set a suitable pace to ensure we all got round in the time allowed. It meant we could share the route finding – particularly in the dark – and keep each other going.

“The others had ridden events of 200 miles or more in the past and really looked after me well. I did enjoy most of the ride in spite of the bad weather, but there were some difficult bits like going up to Dyliffe from Machynlleth – a climb of about 500m – in torrential rain with a strong head wind.

“The event was 307km with more than 4000m of climbing,” said Lowri.

“Up until this year my longest rides had been the 200km events, so when I decided to go for a longer distance I thought it would be a good chance to collect sponsorship for Nightingale House and Robert Owen House in Liverpool.”
