EMPLOYEES at Vale Royal Borough Council are being given the opportunity to take part in a Cycle to Work scheme.

The scheme enables staff to have the loan of a bike that they can use to cycle to work.

It operates on a salary sacrifice basis with employees paying an amount back each month, for 12 months, from their gross salary.

Employees are able to save on the cost of the bicycle as the council can reclaim the VAT and a reduction in the amount of tax and National Insurance that they pay, resulting in around a 43% saving on each bike.

The scheme is one of a series of measures introduced under the Government’s Green Transport Plan.

It also supports the council’s SMYLE campaign by promoting healthier journeys to work and reducing environmental pollution.

Mark Stocks, lead councillor for Environmental Policy, said: “We are keen to play our part in addressing climate change.”
