YEAR 7 pupils at Castell Alun, Hope, had the opportunity to learn all about the work of the emergency services at a special event this week.

The Crucial Crew visited the school on Wednesday and all Year 7 children were instructed on how to stay safe in dangerous situations.

The day was informative and practical, with all pupils participating in activities laid on by the Fire and Rescue Service, the Ambulance Service and North Wales Police.

Real-life situations were simulated and pupils received training in identifying problems early and acting to prevent situations from worsening.

The 220 pupils spent about 30 minutes in the company of each of the services on a rolling programme.

During the visit to each station of the circuit, the children were given information on the function of each of the services. The police looked at consequences of anti-social behaviour and drug prevention with all pupils, while the Ambulance Service demonstrated life-saving techniques.

The fire brigade considered ways of avoiding dangerous situations and the most appropriate ways to act when threatened by fire.

Headteacher David Mountfort said: 'The day has been very useful for our children. Not only are they better informed about how to keep safe when danger rears its head, but they are also more aware of the need to make wise decisions in avoiding potential trouble.'
