A NEW Communities First programme has been launched in Hightown, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.

The scheme was officially launched yesterday by First Minister Rhodri Morgan in Hightown Community Centre in Brynycabanau Road.

And the Hightown Communities First logo was designed by Martha Barnes from St Mary’s School, Wrexham.

The design a logo competition, which lasted several weeks, involved St Mary’s, St Giles and Bodhyfryd schools.

The judges were Ian Lucas MP, Lesley Griffiths AM, Do Evans and Sian Hope from the Communities First Steering Group.

Martha won a framed picture of the logo, a book token prize and a certificate. All entrants were presented with a certificate of achievement.

Hightown Communities First co-ordinator, Pauline Vickers, said: “There was a high standard of entries and it was a difficult choice for the judges, but they did feel that Martha’s logo pictured best what Hightown Communities First is about ‘joining hands and working together’ to improve the Hightown area.

“We are very pleased with our new logo which will now be used on all our publicity materials. I would like to thank the schools for their support and my congratulations go to Martha Barnes and all the children taking part in the competition.”
