DRINKS provider Diageo has been awarded the Business in the Community's Big Tick Award for work done at its packaging operations in Runcorn.

The Big Tick rewards businesses that show a positive impact both on society and on their company and the Runcorn firm received the accolade at a gala dinner at the Royal Albert Hall.

The bottling and canning plants in Runcorn and Belfast, which was also recognised at the awards, are responsible for packaging over 460 million litres of premium drinks brands including Guinness, Harp, Budweiser and Smirnoff Ice every year.

David Varian, packaging director for the two sites said: “I would like to congratulate everyone in Belfast and Runcorn for contributing to this success.

“In Runcorn, waste to landfill has been reduced by 95% since 2004 and waste recycled by 10% in the last year.

“We have successfully minimised packaging without compromising functionality, quality or consumer requirements and this award is a ringing endorsement of our strategy.”
