WREXHAM are just one game away from the Millennium Stadium in the LDV Vans Trophy.

Their appearance in the showpiece, which could be worth more than £200,000 for the cash-strapped club, moved a step closer after last Tuesday's 5-3 win at Oldham Athletic in the first leg of the Northern Area Final.

The Dragons, who are currently in administration, go into the second leg at the Racecourse on Tuesday, March 8 knowing they need to protect that two-goal advantage in order to guarantee a trip to Cardiff.

In-form Basque striker Juan Ugarte grabbed a hat-trick in the emphatic victory, to add to singles from Mark Jones and Darren Ferguson that put the visitors into a 5-1 lead, before two late goals from the Latics reduced the deficit.

Manager Denis Smith was delighted with the result and the performance, but he believes the tie is far from over.

He said: 'We played some super stuff for 70 minutes and then gave a silly goal up which put us under pressure, and the referee was conned for the third - that all makes it interesting for the second leg.

'But some of the football we played was superb and Mark Jones in the first half was unplayable. Then on top of that, Juan's finishing was top-class.

'It looks like he's starting to get a good partnership going with Chris Llewellyn.'
