CARPETS, tables, and a wheelie bin containing a power blaster were just some of the items abandoned by illegal fly-tippers in Elton.

Other rubbish blew across the parish field, becoming trapped in overgrown bushes and darkening the lives of local residents.

Cllr Christine Leith moved to counteract the growing problem when she became troubled by the presence of rats and anti-social behaviour around derelict garages in the village’s Dairy Bank and Alvanley View areas.

Cllr Leith roused the council to begin clean up work throughout the village and, consequently, witnessed a dramatic decline in the amount of rubbish being dumped.

Among other work conducted, a team was seen to prune the field and a cleaner, now contactable through a public helpline, hired to take care of the afflicted garages.

Some of the residents began to repaint the garage doors and replaced the doors of two elderly residents.

Members of the public can attend open surgeries outside the Elton Precinct shops to air their views and keep themselves updated on the progress of the work.

These surgeries will fall on the following dates this year: July 31, September 4, October 30, December 4.
