SHROPSHIRE’S Registration & Celebratory Services is to offer a new civil funeral service from September 1.

A civil funeral service is a ceremony without any religious content. It aims solely to remember and celebrate the life of the person who has died.

A ceremony can be held almost anywhere and is appropriate for cremations, burials at non-religious burial grounds or woodland burial sites. The service will be conducted by a trained celebrant.

Cllr Mike Owen says: “For those with no particular religious beliefs, a civil funeral service provides an alternative to the religious ceremony.

“I’m pleased that we are now able to offer such ceremonies and would like to thank our local funeral directors for helping to make this possible.”

Shropshire County Council’s registration and celebratory services already offers civil wedding, civil partnership and civil naming ceremonies.
