A NEW NHS service is being launched in Cheshire West and Chester which aims to combat the growing problems of childhood obesity.

The Child Lifestyle Service, run by Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust (Bridgewater), will run Fit 4 Life programmes in local venues such as schools, community centres and sports centres.

The events will aim to educate young people from five to 16 about the benefits of healthy eating as well as using fun activities and team games to encourage regular exercise.

Bridgewater chief executive Dr Kate Fallon said: “Bridgewater is delighted to be providing this new service which has been commissioned by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

“We hope to prevent children from developing bad habits regarding food and exercise which could affect their future health and we will support them to have healthier, happier lives.

“Our Fit 4 Life programmes have been running successfully in Halton and St Helens for three years helping over 500 children and young people.

“We look forward to running similar programmes in Cheshire West and Chester to encourage children and young people to get physically active and cook, prepare and taste healthy foods.

“The programme also includes education sessions covering topics such as the five food groups, recognising hidden fats and sugars in foods, understanding food labels and correct portion sizes.”

Fit 4 Life programmes last between four and six weeks. If you are a school, community group or parent / carer interested in finding out more about this service please contact Bridgewater’s Health Improvement Team on 0300 300 0103 or email health.improvement@nhs.net.

Cllr Brenda Dowding, Cheshire West and Chester Council executive member for adult social care and health, said: “The figures for childhood obesity in Cheshire West – slightly higher than the national average – only too clearly emphasise why the council has made its reduction a major public health target.

“There are many reasons for this worrying situation, including bad diet and inactivity.

“Bridgewater’s Child Lifestyle Service will strongly address the benefits of healthy eating and regular exercise with both children and their parents.”

Bridgewater is encouraging more people to have their say on local health services. Find out more about membership at www.bridgewater.nhs.uk.
