A REBELLIOUS rhino whose breed is nearing extinction celebrated his first birthday with a treat.

Eastern Black calf Asani was born to mum Kitani at Chester Zoo 12 months ago.

He marked the special occasion by making short work of a carrot, beetroot, banana and courgette cake made by his keepers.

Asani has doubled in size during the last year.

“All toddlers enjoy their first birthday and, although Asani is definitely bigger than your average one-year-old, he’s no exception when it comes to enjoying his birthday,” said Chas Mackenzie, team leader for the rhino section at the Upton zoo.

“Asani is Swahili for ‘rebellious’ and he is certainly a proper handful but he behaved like the perfect birthday boy.”
