WEST Cheshire College launched a year of celebrations to mark the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with a visit from Chester Fencing Club.

Students, staff and members of the public all had the chance to have a go at the Olympic sport.

Helen Owen, manager of care services at West Cheshire College, said: “It’s not often that people get the chance to try a new sport and that’s what our year of celebrations is all about.”

Diana Scipanova, from Chester Fencing Club, added: “Everyone was very enthusiastic and many of them showed a great talent for the sport, so we are hoping that they’ll take up fencing as a new hobby.”

West Cheshire College last year became a member of the Get Set network, the official London 2012 education programme for schools and colleges across the UK.

Fencing was the first event of the year-long celebrations which includes visits from past Olympians and Paralympians, the Cheshire Jets and Chester FC and demonstrations of a variety of sports including handball and beach volleyball.

The Chester Fencing Club has more than 70 members and meets every Thursday at the Christleton High School Sports Centre, Village Road, Christleton.
