BUNGLING council contractors accidentally erected a tiny tree in Ellesmere Port town centre.

The blunder was rectified on Friday and a tree twice as tall now towers over shoppers.

Les Lyon, Port Arcades, welcomed the council’s newfound Christmas spirit.

He said: “There’s been comment about the size of the Christmas tree that Cheshire West and Chester Council put up.

“It was a fairly stunted little creature. They’ve returned to the town and replaced it with something a bit bigger and a bit more appropriate.

“If you’ve got a local authority that take concerns on board, we should say so just as loudly as when they don’t. It’s much larger now. It very much brightens the town up.”

Council spokesman Ian Callister admitted the original tree was put there in error.

He added: “We order a lot of trees. The wrong one was installed and somebody brought it to our notice and we replaced it with a bigger one.

“We order trees for across the borough and the one installed in Ellesmere Port is plainly too small. The wrong tree was installed by mistake. It was rather too small for its location.

“The other one was 10ft but it was 2ft in the ground. We are delighted that people are now happy with it.”
