A £25,000 project to improve safety at an accident blackspot in Winsford will begin on Monday.

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) has decided to launch the scheme at the A54 Weaver roundabout after figures showed there have been 24 collisions resulting in injuries at the location over the last three years.

After the work, which will take about a month to complete, the road from the roundabout to Station Road, along Winsford bypass, will be reduced to one lane by hatch markings.

On the roundabout itself the road will be split into three lanes opposite The Ark pub and the approach to the High Street arm. All lane markings will be upgraded.

CWaC environment executive member Neil Ritchie said: “The aim of the project is to prevent the number of collisions and increase road safety.

“Each leg of the five junctions making up the roundabout has been looked at carefully and new road markings should also make this large roundabout safer for drivers.”

The roundabout will remain open to traffic during the work, but may be down to one lane in places.

Winsford Town and CWaC councillor Charlie Parkinson, of Pentland Close, has long campaigned for safety measures on the A54 Oakmere Road.

He praised the new initiative and said the busy junction needed reviewing with plans afoot for the waterfront regeneration and the £10m Learning Zone.

“Any improvements are very welcome,” he told the Chronicle. “Winsford Town Council has been saying for a long time something should be done.”
