A CHESHIRE Police operation has resulted in one of the biggest mainland seizures of cannabis ever.
The operation resulted in two separate hauls of the drug – one of 105 kilos, the second of 2,500 kilos – around two and a half tonnes.
As a result of the Cheshire investigation, it is believed that the supply of cannabis in the North West may have been interrupted to the value of over £10m.
Around midday on Friday (October 17), police stopped two cars containing two Runcorn men on the M62 at Junction 11 (Birchwood). Recovered from inside one vehicle was what is believed to be just over 100 kilos of cannabis. The men were arrested and taken into custody in Cheshire.
Police enquiries have then led officers to a non residential address in Wakefield, where a further two and a half tonnes of what is believed to be cannabis was recovered by Cheshire officers assisted by colleagues in West Yorkshire Police.
The two men arrested on the M62 in Cheshire were charged at the weekend with conspiracy to supply cannabis.
They are Anthony Collings, 40, and Colin Joseph Whitfield, 35, both of Runcorn. They appeared at Halton Magistrates Court this morning and were remanded in custody.
