POLICE are appealing for pedestrians and cyclists in Ellesmere Port to be safety conscious when using the roads this summer.

Sergeant Rachel Gallagher of the Western area collision investigation team said: “We have seen an increase in injuries on the roads over the last few weeks.

“The nicer weather and longer nights have seen more people out and about in the evenings.

“Some incidents have involved pedestrians on mobile phones or listening to MP3 players.

“I would ask pedestrians to make sure they are concentrating properly when crossing roads, particularly at night.”

The team has also seen a slight increase in cyclists sustaining head injuries, with four collisions in the last month.

Sgt Gallagher said: “I would appeal to parents to make sure their children are wearing helmets when they ride their bikes.

“Cycling is a great, environmentally friendly, healthy way to get around, but we want cyclists to stay safe on the roads.”
