CHESHIRE Fire and Rescue Service is counting down to Christmas by encouraging Ellesmere Port residents to remember 12 simple ways of staying safe during the festive period.
The service will be sending out potentially lifesaving tips to homeowners up until Christmas Eve.
Firefighters attend more accidental fires in homes across the county during the Christmas period than at any other time of the year.
The 12 safety steps are:
Check your Christmas tree lights conform to the British Standard. On outdoor illuminations always use a residual current device (RCD).
Switch off electrical appliances when not in use, unless they’re designed to stay on.
Decorations can burn easily – don’t attach them to lights or heaters.
Never place candles near your Christmas tree or furnishings.
Make sure your family and visitors staying for the festive period know what to do in an emergency.
Celebrate Christmas and New Year safely.
Never leave cooking unattended.
If you are planning to celebrate with fireworks, store them in a metal box.
Make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished.
Check the battery in your smoke alarm every week.
Keep candles, lighters and matches out of reach of children.
Take the time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours.
