THR Red Dragons head to one of their unluckiest away grounds tomorrow in search of their first three-point haul of the season.

Having opened with a 0-0 home draw against Chester-field last Saturday, Wrexham face Notts County at Meadow Lane, where they have ended up on the losing side on four of their last six visits.

County were hammered 5-0 at Bristol City on Saturday but bounced back with an excellent Carling Cup first-round victory at Preston on Tuesday, winning on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Wrexham weren't so lucky as they went down 2-0 in a stormy tie at Crewe Alexandra.

Manager Denis

Smith was convinced the second-half penalty which gave Crewe the lead should not have been given and was dismissed from the dugout by referee Trevor Parkes for his protests.

His mood did not improve when defender Brian Carey was sent-off in injury time for apparently denying Crewe's Steve Jones a goalscoring opportunity.

Said Smith: 'I know it's all about results, but we were the better team and we lost the game.' Injury-prone forward Chris Armstrong (Achilles) was rested for the midweek cup tie but could return tomorrow. Ironically, Armstrong's replacement, Lee Jones, injured an ankle on a pop-up sprinkler at Gresty Road and had to be replaced at half-time. The Football League has ruled that Wrexham could receive up to £250,000 for midfielder Rob Davies, 16, who joined West Brom this summer having previously been with Wrexham's youth development programme.

A tribunal ordered Albion to cough up £50,000 immediately, with the rest depending on first-team appearances and international caps.

CHESTER CITY: Blues are chasing Northampton Town striker Darryn Stamp in time for tomorrow's visit of Forest Green Rovers.

The 24-year-old Yorkshireman cost the Cobblers £50,000 from Scarborough last year, but his appearances last season were restricted to 22 league games in which he scored four goals.

City boss Mark Wright has been looking for a big target-man for some time and he believes Stamp could be the man to bring the best out of his other front players Michael Twiss, Kevin Rapley, Ian Foster and Daryl Clare, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

Wright, who was pleased with his team's 1-0 win over Tam-worth on Tuesday, thanks to a Carl Ruffer goal, may be without new skipper Andy Harris tomorrow. The midfielder has broken a bone in his wrist, but it's possible he could play with a protective covering on the injury.

There is better news of central defenders Phil Bolland and Scott Guyett. They have both resumed light training and could be considered for the Conference game at Exeter City tomorrow week.

Wright hinted after the game against Tamworth, which produced City's second successive clean sheet - they drew 0-0 at Stevenage last Saturday - that he would be reluctant to makes changes for tomorrow's game, but the signing of Stamp could change that. Chester's Conference match at Burton Albion has been put back 24 hours to Wednesday, October 8 to be shown live on Sky Sports. Michael Twiss scored two goals and Danny Byrne was also on target for the reserves in a 3-0 win at Leigh RMI on Tuesday. Chester go to Vaux-hall Motors in a Lancashire League match on Tuesday (6.30). Liverpool's scheduled FA Premiership Reserve League opener against Bolton at the Deva Stadium on August 22 has been put back to December 18. They are now due to play their first game at the Deva against Manchester City on Monday, September 1 (7pm).
