A CAMPAIGN to make people's homes more secure and safe from crimes like distraction burglary has been launched.

Wrexham Community Safety Partnership's Safe in the Homes scheme helps vulnerable and elderly people to feel safe in their homes, providing 100% grants to eligible applicants.

If you live in Wrexham County Borough, are over 60, have experienced house or distraction burglaries or been a victim of bogus callers, you could be entitled to assistance under the scheme.

It is also available to widows, widowers and partners alone due to bereavement.

The scheme provides advice on home security and may also include, after an assessment, measures to secure a person's home, for example by changing door locks for greater security, adding door chains, a door viewer, wireless door intercom systems and security lighting.

Referral to the scheme will initially be accepted from Victim Support, Neighbourhood Watch via their Bereavement pack, North Wales Police, Wrexham Care & Repair and Wrexham County Borough Council's Housing and Social Services Departments.

Successful applicants can secure a 100% grant - up to a maximum of £500 - for security equipment for their property.

In return they are asked to complete an evaluation survey 12 months after completion of the assistance.

Chief Inspector Bob Wilson said: 'Doorstep crime is something we take very seriously. Evidence shows there is a real possibility that the victim's future health and confidence can suffer as a result.

'With the Safe in the Home scheme we are now able to provide security measures which will reduce the chances of that person being targeted again.'
