USEFUL carpentry skills are being passed on through a project aimed at giving people greater access to opportunities.

Students at the Barclays-funded Caia Park Enable Project have received their Open College Network (OCN) accredited certificates in recognition for their outstanding efforts and participation in the Enable Woodwork course.

The project provides individual support, advice and guidance to the most socially isolated groups on the Caia Park estate.

It helps them access mainstream learning opportunities which, because of barriers such as low confidence and self-esteem they would not otherwise use.

Jo Perera, mentor support worker for the project said: 'Not only does the Enable Project fill a hole in people's lives, it gives people often excluded from education the opportunity to gain knowledge through training and practical experience through volunteering, all while making some great friends along the way and improving their chances of getting or changing their job.

Kathy Brown, Barclays regional community manager for Wales said: 'Barclays is delighted to be involved in such a fantastic project which will make a real and lasting difference to both the individuals and the Caia Park community.

As part of the community it is essential that we are able to give something back.'

The Caia Park Partnership has a Lifelong Learning Centre which currently runs 43 accredited courses which every Enable student is able to access with the additional support the project provides.
