A STATUE of a miner will be placed in Hafod to commemorate those who worked there for more than 100 years.

Wrexham Countryside Service and Groundwork Wrexham intend the sculpture to commemorate the people who worked at Hafod Colliery. They are also seeking ways to celebrate the wildlife and landscape of the surrounding area.

Hafod Colliery was closed in 1968 after 105 years. Since then Bonc yr Hafod has become a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and has several ponds that provide a home to the great crested newt. A steering group has been set up to highlight the diverse wildlife in the area and is working with pupils of Johnstown Junior School.

Artist and sculptor Graeme Mitcheson, from Derbyshire, is creating the sculpture of a miner to be placed at the summit. The project should be completed by the end of July.
