MORE than a dozen cars have been seized by Winsford police during a crackdown on uninsured drivers and tax dodgers.

Officers from Winsford Community Action Team are targeting drivers who use the roads illegally and have already achieved significant results.

PC Ross Hamilton said: “In the past three or four months we have seized more than a dozen cars from people who either didn’t have insurance or whose licence didn’t cover the vehicle they were driving.

“It’s a good start but we intend to keep going to make the streets of Winsford safer and free from those who use them illegally.”

To maintain the clampdown’s initial success, PC Hamilton and his colleagues need help from residents. And he wants anyone who knows an illegal driver to shop them.

“We can generally only take action if we have had information from the public that vehicles are being driven illegally,” he said.

“Often we are contacted by people who give us a name or a registration number which we can then look out for.

“This intelligence is vital and I would appeal to anyone who has information to contact us.”

As well as legal action and a potential court appearance, those whose vehicles are seized could face hefty financial penalties.

There is an automatic £105 release fee for a vehicle as well as a charge of £12 per day for each day the vehicle is kept impounded.
