A SUSPECTED drunk driver crashed into a lamp post and caused part of a wall to fall on to railway sidings.

One of the passengers, a 24-year-old man, is now in a critical but stable condition at Walton Neurological centre with serious head injuries.

The 24-year-old driver hit the post outside Little Sutton station in Ellesmere Port in the early hours of Saturday morning, causing the lamp to fall on to the railway bridge wall.

Part of the wall collapsed and pieces dropped on to the railway sidings below.

Another 25-year-old passenger was unhurt but the driver, from Newquay, in Cornwall, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has been bailed until January 29.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no pedestrians were hurt.
