TWO teenagers were critical in hospital last night after their car plunged into a canal in Warrington.

Emergency services rushed to the Bridgewater Canal, Stockton Lane, at 9.50pm.

The crash happened after the car hit a bridge before rolling down an embankment into the water.

Police officers leaped into the canal to rescue the occupants and fire crews gave first aid.

A male and female, both 16, were last night described as being in a "critical" condition at Warrington General Hospital. Two other occupants, who were thrown from the car after it hit the bridge, did not require treatment.
