A MAJOR safety campaign by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has seen a 25% reduction in cooker fires.

The Your Grill Can Kill initiative was launched before Christmas to under- line the dangers of leaving cookers, grills and deep fat fryers unattended and was supported by newspapers and radio stations across Cheshire.

Banners were also displayed at 24 fire stations across the county, and more than 20,000 households received leaflets which gave information about the campaign.

During a nine-week period between December and March records show the number of cooker fires was lower than the same period in 2006/2007 by nearly a quarter.

Cheshire Fire Authority chairman Cllr Tony Hooton said: “The campaign has proved to be an excellent way to get an important safety message to members of our community at a time of year when we see a rise in this type of incident.

“A quarter reduction in incidents involving cooker fires is significant as the misery to families who are victims of a fire in their property and the cost of the damage, both financially and emotionally, is something that can’t be underestimated.”
