NEWLYWEDS Jon and Sheryl Henderson thought they didn't have too much to celebrate immediately after their wedding.

The Wrexham couple were all set to ditch their honeymoon after learning their beloved pet dog Jack had escaped from kennels he had been staying at during the ceremony.

The distraught couple launched a frantic 48-hour search with family and friends.

'We were quite prepared to scrap the two-week honeymoon in Greece,' said Sheryl.

'But my dad found Jack just in time, and I was hysterical when he broke the good news.'

The couple, who live in Yale Street, Johnstown, were traumatised when they were told their toy Jack Russell had escaped from boarding kennels at Pantymwyn, near Mold.

Airbus worker John, 22, and nanny Sheryl, 21, spent all day Sunday hunting for their dog.

The couple, who were married at Holy Trinity Church, Rhostyllen, on Saturday, left Jack at the Alyn boarding kennels on Friday because they didn't want to lock him in the house while they were at the wedding.

They were due to pick him up on Sunday morning, but when they arrived at the kennels they were horrified to hear he had escaped soon after arriving.

'We couldn't believe it,' said Sheryl.

'We spent 12 hours on Sunday hunting high and low in the vicinity of the kennels trying to find him.

'There were a number of sightings, but as he is a nervous little dog, he wouldn't go up to anyone.'

The couple returned on Monday and Tuesday with about a dozen volunteers to continue the search.

Sheryl's dad Gareth Brimfield finally found Jack near the kennels.

'I just sobbed with relief,' said Sheryl.

'We took Jack straight to the vet for a check up. He's lost a little weight and has a few cuts, but otherwise he's no worse for his experience.

'We can now go on honeymoon knowing he is safe with my parents while we're away.

'The whole episode has been a nightmare. We would have definitely have postponed the honeymoon if he hadn't been found.

'Jack's a real character and a part of the family. He sleeps on the bed and when we are at work he stays with my mum Pat.

'Jon gave me Jack as a special 19th birthday present. I can't tell you how much he is loved.'

A spokeswoman at the kennels declined to comment.
