York City 1 Northwich Vics 1

MIKE Byrne won Vics another precious point on Tuesday.

The midfielder turned quickly deep inside the York box in the 74th minute to fire across goalkeeper Tom Evans and into the far corner of the net.

Evans, it has to be said, was culpable and later he was helpless and grateful. Again a chance fell to Byrne and he hit his shot into the ground, the ball bouncing inches wide of an upright.

Vics had the ball in the net in the brief flurry of exchanges, but Darren Stamp had clearly handled.

As the game settled York took the lead. Richard Brodie was the scorer after being played in behind the Northwich defence in a slick move.

Stamp came closest to equalising before the break. An Evans miskick landed at his feet 10 yards into the York half and he instantly shot goalward, but was a couple of feet off target.

The longer the game wore on the better Northwich looked. While Brodie brought Ben Connett into action there was only an occasional sharp pass to remind home fans they used to be a Football League club.

Jamie Mullan and Aaron Burns for their respective skills and pace caused problems in the City defence and Vics closed the game looking likelier winners than losers letting the Setanta TV audience, including future rivals no doubt, see NORTHWICH: Connett; Meadowcroft, Belle, Welch; Mullan, Crowell, Byrne, Bryom (Carr 29), Brown; Stamp, Steele (Burns 79).
