THE Victorian age will be recreated at Chirk Castle on Saturday for the 'Costume in the Castle' lecture.

Historical costume expert and lecturer Lesley Edwards will demonstrate the dressing of a lady of the 1850s, with underwear, tight lacings and crinoline frame with tartan fabrics.

The lecture will bring to life the time of Fanny Myddelton Biddulph, wife of the owner of the castle in the 1850s, a vibrant character, skilled artist, local benefactor and the first love of Charles Darwin.

Darwin's letters described Fanny as the 'prettiest, plumpest person that Shrop-shire possesses'.

Lesley Edwards will be accompanied by a model and as the lecture progresses, it will be demonstrated how a lady of quality was dressed by her maid. Admission is limited and by ticket. Ring 01691 777701 to reserve a place.
