MAJOR works to replace an old rail bridge in Crewe has hit traders hard in the pocket after their road was closed.

Businesses along Wistaston Road claim they are already feeling the impact of the busy route being closed on

January 7 and traffic diverted away from their premises on to Dunwoody Way.

They are demanding compensation from Network Rail and a reduction in their business rates from Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council.

The road is closed for six months while engineers work on a £1.4m scheme to replace the bridge over the Chester line.

John Ellwood at Newpark Motors, said: “Already we are feeling the impact. There have been far fewer people through the doors than this time last year.

“We pay business rates for a main road frontage and traders will be grouping together to see if there will be a reduction or a rebate payable. We will also be asking Network Rail to compensate us.”
