LORD Mandelson will meet union leaders and car workers when he tours the Ellesmere Port plant this afternoon.

As part of those talks the Business Secretary will update them on the discussions the Government has been having with all the parties involved in the bidding for General Motors’ European operations.

He will also reiterate the Government’s commitment to continued Vauxhall production in the UK.

Lord Mandelson said: “We are determined to continue out detailed discussions with RHJI, Magna and other interested parties to secure a long term commercial future for Vauxhall.

“I and my officials are in constant contact with the US and German governments and GM and others to ensure Britain’s interests are fully represented.

“As one of GMEs most efficient plants, Ellesmere Port produces one of the UK’s favourite cars, the Vauxhall Astra and I hope one day the Ampera.

“Vauxhall is an excellent and very popular UK brand. Continued Vauxhall production remains a top priority for this government.”

Ellesmere Port’s union convenor John Fetherstone said: “This is an efficient plant. We are breaking all records. We are building the new Astra and deserve the support of the Government.

“This is a plant that can perform and that has proved itself over the years and we want that performance recognised by the Government.

“It is important to the workforce knowing that Lord Mandelson is supportive of us. He has expressed a desire to see the new car and hopefully he will be impressed.”
