A KEEN horticulturalist will open her garden to the public for the 20th successive year this week.

On Sunday Liz Carter will invite people into Briarfield Gardens, The Rake, Burton, Neston, from 2-5pm.

Ms Carter first – nervously – opened Briarfield in 1993 as part of the National Gardens Scheme and discovered she enjoyed it.

She said: “Looking back so much has changed; trees and shrubs have matured, species grown have multiplied astronomically, there are now three alpine gravel beds and numerous water features, enhanced by several garden ornaments from the Danish ceramicist Lotte Glob.

“But enthusiasm for collecting and propagating unusual plants continues unabated. Of course this is reflected not only in the garden but also in the ever-expanding plant sale.”

This year Claire House Children’s Hospice is serving afternoon tea with homemade cakes in St Nicholas Church.

Ms Carter added: “The Easter flowers will provide a beautiful setting for your relaxing cuppa.”

From 11am people can visit the Burton and Puddington Art Group annual exhibition just behind the village hall.

Charities benefiting include Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Admission to Briarfield on Sunday is £3.50 and free for children.
