More than 80 people enjoyed a free canal boat trip at Anglo Welsh at Bunbury as part of Drifters’ National Open Day.

The event, which was supported by the Canal & River Trust, offered canal boat holiday taster sessions at 19 canal boat hire bases across England and Wales.

Manager at the Anglo Welsh Bunbury base Steve Harrison said: “We had a busy open day here, blessed with beautiful sunshine at the Anglo Welsh canal boat hire on the Shropshire Union Canal at Bunbury.

“We had around 200 visitors to our event, enjoying the blacksmithing and canal craft demonstrations. More than 80 people enjoyed a free mini-trip along the canal, with tea, coffee and homemade cakes. We look forward to welcoming them back to the canal again soon.”

Nationally more than 3,000 people enjoyed a free boat trip at a Drifters’ Open Day event, and in total an estimated 4,000 people attended.

Head of boating at the Canal & River Trust Mike Grimes added: “It’s fantastic that so many people took to the water last Sunday at a Drifters' Open Day event – many for the first time.

“Narrowboat holidays can often be the start of a lifelong passion for the waterways. We hope many of these visitors will return to the waterways soon.”
