WORSHIPPERS are counting the cost after burglars ransacked Wesley Place Methodist Church in Alsager.

Police say the intruders smashed a small quarter glass pane in the rear fire door and reached through to release the door bar.

They then entered the church, searching most of the rooms including the vestry. It appears no items were stolen.

The Rev Alan Smithson said: “We don’t really keep anything valuable here. Any money we get is banked immediately.

“They did do some damage though to the rear window and the vestry door, which our insurance will pay for. It means the premiums will go up Insuring a church is getting more expensive.

“We’ve had a couple of incidents recently of lead being stolen from the roof, but it’s several years since we last had a break in. My worshippers are shaken and upset.”
