NEW signing Jon Newell could get a baptism of fire tonight when Caernarfon Town host The New Saints.

The 20-year-old full-back has signed for the Canaries following his release from Bangor City.

Striker Darren Wright, who missed Town’s 3-2 defeat at Newi Cefn Druids a week ago, is also available.

Ken McKenna’s full-timers have not stumbled in their last five appearances at The Oval, winning three times and drawing twice, and will be confident of another win.

Caernarfon boss Steve O’Shaughnessy said: “TNS are odds-on favourites to win the league title again, because of their obvious strengths, but they have been beaten twice.

“We must be at our best but, if we have luck on our side and catch TNS on a bad day, we could get the result that would light up our season.”

Striker John Toner looks set to return to the starting line-up for the title-chasing Saints, writes John Bridgwater.

Victory would take the Saints two points clear at the top of the Welsh Premier, but the defending champions are forced to make changes up front with Mike Wilde suspended, while Nicky Ward is still troubled by a knee problem.

Their absence means a likely recall for Toner, who was an unused substitute in last weekend’s 2-1 home win over Haverfordwest.

“It’s a chance for John,” said manager Ken McKenna. “On his day, he’s the best striker in the league but he’s inconsistent. It’s up to him to grasp his chance and make it difficult for us to leave him out.”

McKenna is wary of the potential pitfalls as he looks to keep up the title challenge.

“It’s very tight at the moment at the top of the table, and there’s always pressure on us to win,” he said.
