ALLEGATIONS that council leader Aled Roberts failed to correctly declare an interest in a debate involving his children's school were due to be aired in a hearing this morning (Thursday).

A Wrexham County Borough Council Standards Committee hearing began into allegations he failed to properly declare an interest in a debate.

Cllr Roberts was set to be called upon to justify his conduct after failing to inform the council that he was a parent of two sons at Ysgol Hooson.

If found guilty he could be suspended for up to six months.

According to a report by the Ombudsman, during an executive board meeting where the Rhos school reorganisation - which includes Ysgol Hooson - was discussed Cllr Roberts vacated the chair but took part in the discussions.

As a governor of the school he was entitled to do this but as a parent he should have left the meeting entirely.

Cllr Ted George reported the incident plus the fact that Cllr Roberts' father-in-law, Cllr Arwel Gwynne Jones, had also taken part in the discussions. Cllr Jones' hearing is tomorrow (Friday).

Both Cllr Roberts and Cllr Jones have written to the Ombudsman with Cllr Roberts pointing out he ensured the debate and vote were re-taken swiftly after the problem was highlighted.
