A LIBRARY and a supermarket will celebrate World Book Night in Ellesmere Port and Neston on April 23.

The national event, to mark UNESCO’s International Day of the Book and Shakespeare’s birthday, is now in its second year.

Many libraries are acting as distribution centres for free books donated by publishers.

These books, whittled down to 25 titles, include Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro and The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella.

They will be picked up by people who have registered with the World Book Night website and may be given away inside or outside the library buildings.

The readers involved are encouraged to pass on the book once they have read it.

Cllr Stuart Parker, executive member for culture and recreation, said: “The love of the written word is so important and that is why it is particularly pleasing that World Book Night is growing in popularity.

“The main aim is to interest non- readers or people who are not regular book readers.

“I am sure that the events will be very successful.”

On Monday Ellesmere Port mayor Angela Claydon will be joining library staff giving away books at the entrance to the Asda store at 4.30pm.

At Neston Library between 6pm and 9pm you can pick up a free book and solve a murder-mystery during entertainment for all the family.
