POLICE are warning residents to be aware of a bogus workman who is attempting to carry out distraction burglaries in Whitby.

The offender, who is posing as a roofer, visited three homes between 3.15-9pm on Thursday claiming he had worked on neighbouring properties.

He then told the elderly occupants they were required to split the bill and demanded payment.

The man is described as being 28-30 years old, 5ft 8-10ins tall, of slim build and clean shaven, although one resident thinks he had a goatee beard.

He has short brown hair and was wearing a blue uniform with a white or gold roofing logo on it.

Cheshire Police are urging householders to always ask for identification and to confirm it by requesting the phone number of the company the person says they are working for.

If you are still unsure then call the police on 0845 458 0000.
