A GANG of thieves posing as breakdown men is using a truck to snatch cars from residents’ driveways.

Wearing fluorescent jackets to look like workmen, they have also towed away vehicles from car parks and streets in a series of brazen thefts across Ellesmere Port.

Police are now warning car owners to be on their guard and have appealed for information from the public to help catch the offenders.

The thieves have been pulling up in a flatbed truck, loading the vehicles on to the back and then driving away.

They are thought to be particularly targeting older cars to sell for scrap.

Detective Sergeant Shaun Pyke said: “We believe this is a professionally-run outfit.

“On a number of occasions the thieves have been challenged while loading cars on to the truck and have calmly explained that the owner has asked for the vehicle to be taken away.

“In the crimes we have seen so far cars have been taken from public car parks, works car parks, roads and residential driveways.”

The most recent theft occurred in a car park off North Road, Ellesmere Port at 11.25am on Monday of last week.

The crooks arrived in a white Leyland DAF truck, loaded a D registration Volvo car on to the back and then fled the scene.

DS Pyke added: “We need to ensure nobody else falls victim to these thieves and I would ask anyone with any information in relation to these thefts to contact me.

“Locked vehicles do not deter these thieves and therefore I would also ask everyone in the Ellesmere Port area to remain vigilant and be aware that these crooks could be on the lookout for their next victim.”
