WINSFORD United are just over a week away from kicking-off the new season, and manager Joe Gibiliru is confident his squad is taking shape.

The Blues drew 1-1 with Cymru Alliance side Flint Town United in the Hydes Brewery Challenge Cup last Wednesday, and a 2-0 loss at Prescot Cables on Saturday did not worry the boss.

“We played some good stuff and I’m happy with that. We were just trying things out and I was having a look at some of the players who’ve been training with us,” he said. “That’s what these friendlies are for.”

Gibiliru has brought a host of new faces to the Barton Stadium this summer, and is sure his side can push for promotion.

Winsford travelled to Connah’s Quay last night before home games against Rochdale Town (formerly Castleton Gabriels) and Sandbach on Saturday and Tuesday. Their first league game is on Saturday, August 9 at Bacup Borough.

Gibiliru said: “After I’ve had a look at everyone I’ll be looking to pick my strongest side for the last couple of friendlies. We’ve got a good squad and we’re looking forward to a successful season.”
