George Morris, a year 10 pupil at Bishop Heber High School , has won a national fencing title after travelling to East London University to compete in the GB Cadet Under 17 Championships.

George’s season has been gathering speed, with excellent results at national competitions bringing rewards by selection for the GB epee squad to compete in Bonn, Copenhagen and Bratislavia.

With his pool fights out of the way it was down to business for George, aged 15 and against older competitors. In the direct eliminator stage, a loss would have meant early exit but several victories saw George in the final against an  older and more experienced  fencer.

A tactical start from both fencers saw George gain a two-point lead before being pegged back. He then moved ahead on points and stayed there by sword and hits to win 15-8 and claim the title.
