POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a road accident in which a 14-year-old cyclist was killed.

Daniel Foulkes, of Great Sutton, sustained serious head injuries when he was involved in a collision with a motorcycle on the A41 near the Sycamore garden centre at 4.55pm last Thursday.

The motorcyclist, who was riding a yellow Kawasaki Ninja machine, and his female passenger were also seriously hurt in the collision.

Neither has been named by police.

All three casualties were rushed to the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Daniel was transferred to Manchester Children's Hospital where he died later from his injuries.

Police say the motorcyclist, a 28-year-old male, has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and he is detained in the Royal Liverpool Hospital with serious arm injuries.

His 31-year-old female pillion passenger is also being treated as the Countess for serious arm and leg injuries.

Detective Inspector Steve Gould, who is in charge of the investigation, said: 'I would urgently like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash. We would particularly like to hear from anyone who saw either the young lad with his cycle or the motorcycle in the moments prior to the collision.'

Daniel was the son of Stephen and Lesley Foulkes and the eldest of their three children.

He has a 12-year-old sister Leah and a brother Alex, 11.

He was educated in Ellesmere Port, first attending St Saviour's Junior and Infants Schools and then Ellesmere Port Catholic High School.

Daniel was a keen and gifted sportsman, playing football at the Manchester City Academy and was also interested in kick boxing.

He is known to have been a very popular boy with a wide circle of friends.

An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned yesterday.

Witnesses to the accident should contact Cheshire Constabulary's traffic unit on 01244 350222.
