ROBBIE WILLIAMS scored his first goal of the season as Colwyn Bay maintained their play-off hopes with a crucial home victory over third-placed Cammell Laird.

But it was a half-time tactical switch by manager Gary Finley which turned the game their way after they’d been overrun for much of the first half.

“They played a diamond formation with five men in midfield to our four and caused us a lot of problems in the first half,” admitted the manager.

“We changed our formation at half time to try and combat that and although they still had a lot of the ball they weren’t able to hurt as much.

“Make no mistake, Cammell Laird are a very, very good side so this was a huge win for us.”

Colwyn Bay were in front after just one minutes and 54 seconds in front of a big Good Friday crowd of 551.

Kenny Burgess broke clear from Alex Kevan’s pass and fired past keeper Craig Bryan into the far corner of the net.

Cammell Laird then dominated the half with some neat passing football that pinned Colwyn Bay back for long periods.

On 37 minutes Eddie Jebb cut in from the left and flashed a 30-yard equaliser past Bay keeper Zac Hibbert.

The Seagulls were back in front three minutes after the restart as Williams took a return pass from substitute Darren Wright to slide the ball past the advancing keeper.

Paul Williams then missed a great chance to make it 3-1 when he shot over the bar with just the keeper to beat.

John Lawless had a shot blocked by a defender, Kevan had a header tipped over the bar and Burgess chipped inches wide, but the Bay held on to claim three points.
