Urmston 1Winnington Park 2

WINNINGTON registered their first win of the season with an impressive display at last season’s league runners-up on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead midway through the first half at Wellacre High School, Mark Leigh rifling the first short corner of the match into the left corner of the goal.

John-Paul Dodd in the Winnington goal produced some fine saves and Urmston’s normally prolific short corner routines were repelled by a resolute team effort.

Park went into the break a goal to the good and doubled the lead with 15 minutes to go. Pete Evans made an incisive run at the heart of the Urmston defence, and found the unmarked Andy Birdsey on the left who produced a sublime finish.

Urmston pulled a goal back with 10 minutes left and had a goal disallowed as the ball was deemed to have been struck too high from a short corner. Park held firm to complete a well deserved victory.
