MORE than 350 soldiers from 1st Battalion the Mercian Regiment (Cheshires) will march through Northwich town centre on Monday to mark the granting of the Freedom of the Borough.

The parade will start at 4pm from Leicester Street, continue along Witton Street to the Bull Ring and on to the Memorial Hall, where soldiers will be greeted by the Mayor of Vale Royal, Malcolm Gaskill, civic dignitaries from across Cheshire, local schoolchildren, ex- servicemen and women of the Royal British Legion and members of the public.

“It is going to be a spectacular sight, so I hope the streets will be lined with people ready to give our troops a very warm welcome,” said Cllr Gaskill.

The Mercian Regiment is an infantry regiment of the British Army, formed by the amalgamation of three regiments on September 1 2007 as part of the restructuring of the infantry.

It consists of three regular battalions, plus a TA battalion, and covers Cheshire, Derbyshire, Notts, Staffs and Worcestershire.
