THE WELSH Premier is set to be much stronger this season, according to The New Saints assistant manager Mike Davies, writes Gareth Bicknell.

Saints coach Davies said he was expecting a tough test in his side’s friendly at Bangor City tonight (7.30pm).

The two sides are using the friendly as a warm-up for their respective Uefa Cup clashes, with Bangor hosting Danish side Midjylland at Wrexham’s Racecourse on July 17, while TNS travel to face Lithuanians Suduva the same day.

And tonight’s game will also be an opportunity for fans to get an early indication of their teams’ chances in the domestic league next season, with Nev Powell’s Citizens expected to join champions Llanelli, TNS and Rhyl as contenders for the title.

Davies said: “The league will be a lot stronger this season. Some big signings have come in for various clubs and that can only be good for the league.

“It’s great that Bangor and ourselves are in a position to give each other a test – it’s going to be a competitive match and that’s ideal for us with the Uefa Cup coming up. We’ll see what happens but I’m sure it’ll be a good game.”

TNS, who will be missing striker Alfie Carter tonight through injury, host Gap Connah’s Quay on Saturday at 10am before visiting Colwyn Bay on July 11 at 7.30pm.
